About Us
The Leather Challange
The DFW Leather Corps was founded to meet the growing challenge of division and dissention within the communities we see across the nation.
It is our opinion that this division has partially been caused by the sudden interest and influx of internet people.
It has created a generation of “Armchair Leathermen and Women”. These are those who have learned about leather on the internet and through books but have never lived the Leather experience.
The “Armchair Leathermen” treats Leather as a cafeteria, taking Leather concepts out of context and creating their own “Brand of Leather”. They take what is convenient for them and leave out the rest.
They leave out the hard part. They leave out the part that would make them Leather.
To further complicate the issues, after a period of time they begin to write their experiences as though they are Leather people with years of “real time” experience.
Our surveys show that these new Leather essayist have very little exposure to living in Leather or time in the Leather community. They have the vocabulary and appearance but lack the deeper understanding of Leather.
This is the skewing of the Leather culture and causing traditional leather people to withdraw and go underground.
It misleads new people and creates a fantasy Leather rather than the reality of Leather.
Deeper Challenge:
There is another deeper challenge.
In our opinion, the real problem is not just the influx of people. Most are serious and sincere about learning Leather and the internet is a wonderful social and communication media.
Another issue is that new people coming into Leather do not have access to the emotional and social content of Leather. Leather is not a book or series of writings.
It is the experience of living in a culture that is rich. It is about tribe. It is about emotional connection.
It is about working your way up from the bottom and earning your place.
All Leather generals (leaders) went through Boot Camp. They were under other Leathermen who provided an environment for them to prosper and learn. Learning was individualized and personal. Leather people earned not just Leather but respect.
In short, Leather is tribal not an intellectual pursuit. It is an experience. It has to be lived to understand it.
Hopeful Solution:
We are hopeful that by providing access to a leather tribe that people will have the opportunity to earn their place in Leather. They will experience the emotional and social bonds of belonging in Leather and we hope this will prove to be one solution facing Leather communities that are in subtle division.
We believe it is time to call an end to dirty trick playing and rumor mongering and return to the traditional values and behavior system of Leather.
Our Club:
The DFW Leather Corps is a leather space for Leather people.
This is a welcoming place for people who embrace Leather regardless of age, nationality, sexual orientation or experience.
It is our belief that the Leather culture transcends sexual orientation and its values provides common ground for us to meet, work and prosper together.
This is a welcoming place for new people who want to explore Leather by living it rather than reading it.
Creating a social leather club is the goal and motivating factor of the founders of the DFW Leather Corps.
